Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon

A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall blazoned: Quarterly, Azure and Gray, a spear palewise issuant from base Argent surmounted by a fer de moline Or voided Gules. Attached below the shield a Gold scroll inscribed "SUPPORT IS SURVIVAL" in Black.


Symbolism

The colors blue and gray refer to the rich heritage and tradition of the State of Virginia and together with the spear, a reference to Virtus triumphant over Tyranny from the state seal, allude to the home area of the unit.  The field is quartered, indicative of the four major areas of service provided–administration, medical, supply and transport; and maintenance which is further represented by the color crimson.  The heraldic fer de moline, or millstone support, is symbolic of the basic mission of the organization.


Background

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 22 October 1992.  The symbolism was amended 14 July 2023.

Crest

That for the regiments and separate battalions of the Virginia Army National Guard: On a wreath of the colors Or and Azure "Virtus the genius of the Commonwealth dressed as an Amazon, resting on a spear with one hand and holding a sword in the other; and treading on Tyranny, represented by a man prostrate, a crown falling from his head, a broken chain in his left hand a scourge in his right" all Proper.
